Commitment to greater sustainability: Fraunhofer ENAS receives ISO 50001 certification

Fraunhofer ENAS has been certified according to ISO 50001 since December 2024. The certification confirms the institute's commitment to greater sustainability and the responsible use of resources. With the introduction of the energy management system according to ISO 50001, Fraunhofer ENAS has implemented a structured framework that enables to continuously monitor and optimize energy consumption.

As one of six pilot institutes for the introduction and establishment of an energy management system, Fraunhofer ENAS provides important impulses for the implementation of the Fraunhofer climate strategy within the scope of a Fraunhofer-wide project. As part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the institute´s commitment is helping to become climate-neutral by 2030 and to position science as a pioneer for sustainability.

In addition to the systematic increase in energy efficiency and the increased use of renewable energies, the institute's focus in the area of energy is on reducing energy consumption. To this end, the energy consumption is continuously monitored and optimized and work is being done on the effective implementation of the energy management system into existing processes.

Thanks to the energy-saving measures implemented at the institute, the total energy consumption has been reduced by 7.62 percent between 2021 and 2023. CO2 emissions were also reduced by around 50 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year.

In order to identify further potential for the responsible use of resources, a systematic energy monitoring is to be established at the institute in 2025, thus taking another important step towards a sustainable and climate-friendly future.

The basis for the introduction and integration of a second certified management system was the quality management system according to ISO 9001, which was already introduced at Fraunhofer ENAS in 2019.
