Smart Systems Integration 2018: Highly topical platform for the exchange of knowledge is impressive on both days

Dresden /

Following two intensive days, the Smart Systems Integration 2018 has closed its doors in Dresden, Germany. The event ends with positive results and, once again, proves that it is a significant communication platform on innovative smart systems and their applications.

Conference – Trading of knowledge

Recording a good result with 319 participants, the Conference hosted a total of five keynote speeches, 53 expert lectures, 13 sessions, two special sessions by the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration (EPoSS) and over 35 poster presentations.

Renowned speakers enabled exclusive insights into a broad range of issues including numerous innovations, applications and trends, complex smart systems as well as their components and parts. The scope ranged from the latest materials and technologies, manufacturing processes to success stories on intelligent applications. During the session on “Test and Reliability Methodologies“, for example, Sean Riley, Data I/O Corporation, US, and nominee for the Best Paper Award,  held an inspiring talk on the topic “Security beyond Design: Embedding Roots-of-Trust in Silicon and Cryptographically Securing the Supply Chain from Design to Manufacturing”.

The entire value chain at a glance

In an ever-increasingly connected world there are billions of connected devices, which create a bridge between the real and virtual world. The fundamental basis for the internet of things is the integration of hardware, software and connectivity. Smart integrated systems play an important role as they are the hardware basis for a connected world. For the first time, the SSI 2018 additionally addressed software and connectivity issues.

“We will continue to include such topics in the conference program as it is very important to have experts from the different disciplines such as hardware, software, and connectivity, talking together to gain a common understanding of the tasks to be solved. This is essential to ensure the leading position of Europe in the field of smart systems strategies for artificial intelligence, data security, cloud and FOG computing,” explains the committee chairman Professor Thomas Otto from the Fraunhofer ENAS.

Unique platform for business and networking

In total over 20 international exhibitors from science and industry presented the latest trends, developments and innovations on Smart Systems Integration and looked back at a successful event.

“One has a comprehensive view of what is currently happening in the microelectronics industry – all under one roof and from a single source. Everyone involved in the field gathers at one place: from individual companies, research institutes and research funders as well as a diverse range of non-university institutes,“ commented Georg Weigelt, PR & Marketing, Fraunhofer IZM.

International visitors were not only able to benefit from the information and knowledge afforded by the exhibition but were also given a comprehensive overview of the industry. At the same time, visitors and participants swapped notes with representatives from research institutes, associations and component and system manufacturers as well as service-providers from the field of micro- and nanotechnology, micro-optics, sensors, wireless communication, system integration and microelectronics and mechanics.

Great success for new co-located event

The IoSense Spring School was held for the first time. Co-located with Smart Systems Integration on 11 April, the event provided by the Technischen Universität Dresden concentrated on the topic of “Building Apps for the Internet of Sensors“. The objective of the project is to develop new products with innovative and competitive sensors and sensor systems "Made in Europe" for the Internet of sensor applications.

Next event in Spain, 2019

The Smart Systems Integration will take place from 10 – 11 April 2019 in Barcelona and will be organized by Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems in Chemnitz and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin.
