European Center of Excellence for Microelectronics

The European Test and Reliability Center (ETRC) at Fraunhofer ENAS is a unique competence center in Europe for testing the quality and reliability of complex semiconductor components. With its state-of-the-art testing infrastructure, in-depth expertise, and strong network of partners from science and industry, the ETRC provides comprehensive solutions for assessing the quality, functionality, and durability of next-generation semiconductor functionalities.

Mission and Vision

The ETRC supports customers from science and industry in making semiconductor technologies more reliable, robust, marketable, and sustainable right from the development stage. By integrating applied research, industrial collaboration, as well as state-of-the-art testing and reliability infrastructures, the ETRC plays a key role in ensuring quality, accelerating innovation, and strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty. Its vision is a pan-European center that builds trust in microelectronics – through precise testing, scientifically sound reliability assessments, outstanding quality, and pooled expert knowledge.

Origins and Network

Since 2025, the ETRC has taken an application-oriented approach to combining scientific methods and exceptional expertise with industry requirements. This unique ecosystem for testing and reliability assessments for semiconductor innovations is built on the extensive experience that Fraunhofer ENAS has amassed in mechanical, thermal, and electrical reliability assessments, as well as its expertise in the characterization and testing of electromechanical, photonic, and RF components, including design aspects – in close collaboration with Chemnitz University of Technology. This expertise is complemented by the valuable knowledge of additional international partners from industry and science.

A Significant Center for Industrial Policy

The ETRC is more than just a technology testing center – it is a strategic lever for industrial policy and for strengthening Europe’s technological sovereignty. With state-of-the-art infrastructure, AI-supported fault diagnostics, and close links to research and industry, the ETRC supports the objectives of the European Chips Act and promotes Saxony’s role as a high-tech hub and leading center for microelectronics in Europe.
