Design

To make the performance suitable for different application profiles, the modelling of the actuators, sensors and fluidic component design is necessary in the early development phase. For this, Fraunhofer ENAS uses analytical models, Lumped Element (LE) models and numerical simulations. For example, the optimization of synthetic jet actuators were performed with the help of the so-called combined simulation (a combination of LE modelling and numerical simulation). Based on different principles of actuation, such as piezo actuators or electromechanical actuators, investigations were made to optimize the geometry of synthetic jet actuators. The performance depends on multiple parameters that need to correlate to match the applications scope: diameter of the membrane and the nozzle, the height of the cavity, the resonance frequency and the achievable deflection of the membrane.
