Fluid flow measurement is widely used in both industrial and medical fields. Ultrasonic flowmeters can be applied for either invasive or non-invasive measurements with relatively easy installation. Also, ultrasonic flowmeters have the advantages of high precision and fast response speed. Fraunhofer ENAS has developed an ultrasonic liquid flowmeter based on CMUT. Transit time variation of the ultrasound signal is used for the flowrate estimation. The CMUT-based flowmeter could also measure the liquid flow in small pipes, which is difficult for conventional ultrasonic transducers.
